Abstract
This lecture on Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time", delivered at Lawrence University on October 20, 2008, was designed for students and faculty in the college's Freshman Studies program. Freshman Studies, a multidisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts, has been the cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum for over fifty years. The lecturer, Cathy Kautsky, is a Professor of Music and chair of the keyboard department at Lawrence. Professor Kautsky holds a bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory, a master's degree from The Juilliard School, and a doctoral degree in performance from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
