Abstract

This lecture on Beethoven's fifth symphony, delivered at Lawrence University on November 19, 1999, was designed for students and faculty in the college's Freshman Studies program. Freshman Studies, a multidisciplinary introduction to the liberal arts, has been the cornerstone of the Lawrence curriculum for over fifty years. The lecturer, Bridget Reischl, holds the Kimberly-Clark Professorship in Music at Lawrence. Professor Reischl is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, a student of Robert Spano, and the winner not only of Lawrence's own "Outstanding Young Teacher Award" but also of the Karl Bohm International Conducting Prize, the Walter Hagen Memorial Conducting Prize, and most recently, the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Prize.
