Artist Statement

My art is a concept car, the LG Dark Angel, is an original design that falls, aesthetically, into the category of a hypercar. A hypercar is the most extreme category of automobiles, with the intent of achieving immense speeds, mountains of power, as well as having eye-watering prices. The name ‘Dark Angel’ shows both elegance and disturbance, adjectives communicated through the physical design of my model.

The final car is a love letter to car culture. I have always loved cars and I have dreamed of designing my own. With this design, I meshed my favorite design elements from the automotive world into one car. The car, as stated, is designed as a hypercar. The main characteristics for the design were an ‘intimidating’ front, smooth flowing curves, and a speed tail. The unique design of extended rears, in addition to the rest of the body flowing into the tail, is a characteristic of high speed cars that I have always thought is aesthetically pleasing. Cars with front ends that look menacing and feel alive and angry, I love, because the design makes the car seem more than a piece of metal and wheels, the design gives the car more personality.

For the color, I went with a light blue and a large orange stripe down the middle. The colors and livery are based on the livery designs of vehicles in motorsport when they are sponsored by Gulf. Gulf has been sponsoring teams in motorsports for decades and their liveries have become iconic and well-loved. For the number, I had to choose 95. 95 is the number that Lightning McQueen had in the movie Cars. Cars is one of the main inspirations for my passion, and for as long as I can remember, I have loved cars. There was something that clicked in two-year-old Eli’s head when he saw Lightning McQueen roll out of his trailer with stickers on his side and letters on his tires. From where this project started from back in 2006, the choice to include the 95 was easy and obvious.

Though the project had some issues and did not turn out exactly as I had envisioned, I am happy with the end result and I had a wonderful time creating this piece and working on something that has been a life long love of mine. This was an experience I will definitely not forget.
