Artist Statement

Grief is a funny concept. It’s not physical, yet it aches and crawls under the skin, carving a hole in the center of the ribs. For grief is something to live through, to dance with, something that pushes the human body to exist in a space between the world of the living and the world of the dead. These paintings serve as a memento, an accumulation of memories, fears, regrets, and hope, of those we hold on to. They are keepsakes of the exploration of grief, of pain, and of love in this space of “Elsewhere,” a dreamscape realm reminding us that not only did we lose our loved ones, but they lost us, too.

In the sky, carrying the hopes, the dreams, and the pain, it is where the clouds hold the lanterns for festivity – to be commemorable of their existence. In the sea, holding the weight of sorrows, tears, and joy, it is where a vast monument rests to lap at the skin – to be able to hold them once again.

To my baby cousin, whose life started with tubes and yet lived like there were stars right at his fingertips, there’s games waiting for you on your next visit.

And yet in this place of Elsewhere, I’ll find you on the other side of the sea, soaring in the sky en la forma de un halcón roja. Porque a ti, más te encuentro entre la arena del mar.
