Artist Statement
Ad Infinitum Whimsy follows the story of a small piñata named Whimsy and his journey to regain his stolen candy core. Collaged images of my favorite candy and childhood toys build the land that Whimsy traverses, intertwining my fascination of commercialism and culture with childhood nostalgia. My experience of being part of a low-income Mexican family in a busy city like Minneapolis meant I developed a complex relationship with money and commercial products. I would grow up wandering the shelves at Walmart like it was my playground. And at the same times, I could list off the familiar brands of food and candy that I could only find in the local Mexican grocery store. Fragments of my American identity are engrained in the plastic of the Monster High dolls that I dreamt of having, just as fragments of my Mexican identity are woven into the colorful rows of piñatas that encased the ceiling of the little tiendita. Whimsy’s world and journey encapsulates the feelings of play and imagination that my younger self cultivated despite being the circumstances.
