Artist Statement
We create everyday, in the emails we write, in the art we make, and even in the breakfast we prepare each morning. Creation is intrinsic to our human existence, and it’s an aspect that is often overlooked in the modern era, especially now with the rise of AI and generative art. My work focuses on that act of creation, and the hands that do the creating. By focusing on these hands, and isolating them from their creations, I emphasize that we, as humans, are all creators in our own way.
This exhibition has been broken up into three parts, each focusing on different creative actions. My first section focuses on people that have created history, from Martin Luther King Jr’s gesturing during his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, to the first American Pope greeting the Vatican last May. The second section features my own friends and family members, all of which have their own creative pursuits that have connected me to them in some way. My third section is a collection of self portraits all derived from how I, as an artist, create, both through art as well as in my personal life. To cap off my body of work is a recreation of Michaelangelo’s “Creation of Adam”, with my own hands substituting the originals. This piece encapsulates this entire collection, demonstrating both the desire to create and the act itself.
I believe that humanity is defined by the act of creation – ancient hominins created the first tools that lead to humans becoming what we are today. We make things every day, whether we realise it or not, and we must strive to continue to create art, create literature, create connections, and so many other things that make up our human experience.
