Artist Statement
My work centers around an admiration for queer and transgender bodies. The subjects are more abstract and reflect the fluidity that queer people embrace and exist with. This work is meant to reach a wide audience, and it was made with the history of oppression and revolution of minority groups in America in mind. My hope is that this representation will uplift queer and trans people of varying backgrounds and promote fluidity and acceptance of diverse expression.
The collection of twelve works are a reflection of the people that have been important in my life and of my own experience as a fluidly presenting trans woman. I began using the priority mail labels for my art around this time last year, as I was feeling the consequences of the actions from the current presidential administration. In this way it feels as though I am taking retribution in a small way by using federal resources contrary to how they were meant to be used. I take inspiration from artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michael Basquiat that explored the idea of the personal as political using street art to make their work widely accessible.
