Artist Statement

Glasses is a narrative driven comic strip and animated short. It is an ongoing and personal reflection of my feelings and emotions over the years, as well as a culmination of my college life and experience. As an artist, I enjoy the blend of narrative text in ways that add to or enhance the visuals. The strip is defined by grayscale color schemes, thick outlines and edited photographs, a distinctive style reminiscent of older comics and cartoons. I use these techniques because I admire the messier, more underground style comics. In the short, the visual style of the comics is punched up with subtle and limited animation that shows the characters in new lights, from Tracy’s eyerolls, and even Badman’s more eccentric movement. This in combination with voice acting breathes new life into the world.

The narrative follows a young woman nicknamed ‘Glasses’, neurotic, queer, and routinely depressed as she tries her best to navigate life living the modern age. She is surrounded by a larger cast of characters, such as her best friend, Tracy, a cynical older librarian who is a foil to Glasses’ endless worrying. And Badman, an eccentric, superhero-esque character, who primarily acts as a comic relief. Each character is important in what they bring to the comic, Tracy’s bluntness, and Badman’s comedically blind optimism allows Glasses to grow as a character. The characters, as well as the themes and plots, draw from my life experiences. The comic holds up a funhouse mirror to the human condition finding humor and pathos in our shared insecurities, failures, and quirks.  This is a deeply personal project, and it will continue to expand and evolve in the future.
