Artist Statement
This series uses personal photographs in order to re-examine my feelings of displacement and grief for the past. I had to move frequently as an adolescent due to the need to support my grandma as her health was failing. When she did pass, the loss of her caused a major rift between my family that made it nearly impossible to put back together the pieces of what or who I knew as family. It didn't help that I am also a part of a generation that existed between the physical photo and digital age, because there are few photos available that reference my childhood before or even after her death. In the use of the cyanotype process, the blue monochromatic hue is used to strip the subjects of their spaces in order to bring focus to the forefront. The addition of color is meant to contrast the blue monochrome images in order to highlight the unseen emotions I feel from these photographs. The pieces which include full color are where I step away from re-examination and acknowledge my beginning as a preemie, my current silhouette, and dialogue with my mother. These artworks together are a personal attempt to piece together my past with the present, in order to feel at peace with the history I have.
