Artist Statement

The demands of technology are a consuming force. The next email to send or viral video to watch distorts my reality. Technology becomes the lens through which we see and remember the world. The work I create seeks to reconnect myself and others to the present moment through acts of observation and documentation.

Five life-size paintings depict me lying in bed on a computer. Created through composite images, the paintings rely on filtering reality through a phone, glass bottle, and laptop to capture the feeling of dissociation when a screen is in front of me. In conversation with these paintings are a series of artist books that act as tools of reflection and remembrance documenting the time and memories of engaging with or taking a break away from technology. Methodically selecting materials and binding books becomes a meditative practice. As I paint, I tune in to my body’s experiences taking slow controlled breaths as I paint crisp structured highlights or swaying rhythmically as I blend large areas of color. By being present with my body’s everyday experiences, I can disrupt the demands of technology.
