Artist Statement
My work is about transhumanism and the relationship between humans and the machine.
The visual form of cornstalks and discarded technology is a reflection of humans utilizing the concept of machines. Humans have engineered corn as a monoculture for so long that the crop’s existence is inextricably tied to ours–it would die off if we suddenly vanished. The corn acts as a subversion of what a “machine” can be and to call attention to technological growth. Viewing the TV screens the audience is subjected to repeated imagery of power lines and the hum of electricity, in order to demonstrate the overwhelming complexity of a connected world, its influence on society, its spurring of consumerism, and its effect on our planet.
