Artist Statement

I am interested in the concept of relationships. Surroundings, upbringing, and cultural background can influence the choices we make when confronted with forming or maintaining relationships, as well as how we choose to approach specific situations. These relationships embody people, objects, yourself, the body, and your consciousness. With this exhibition, I focused on relationships from a female perspective. I want to examine dysfunction that may emerge, how it can be concealed or confronted, and how distortion within relationships can affect the overall well-being of a person. Through symbolism, personal experience, and bright color palettes, I aim to explore and display the persistent fragility within women’s relationships with body image, siblings, men, food, and self-worth.

As humans, we’re drawn to images and media that feel familiar. But we are also fascinated by things that make us uncomfortable; things that make us uneasy, yet we can’t look away. By juxtaposing familiarity with discomfort, I hope to capture the mindset I find myself in when contemplating the inner workings of my own relationships. While I have situated these scenes within domestic spaces to showcase the societal expectations that are put on women, the choices I have made exhibit how these expectations extend beyond the domestic and into the subconscious.
