Artist Statement
This work is playful, thought provoking, accessible, and whimsical. It is an exploration of nostalgia which expands upon the bittersweet feelings that arise when recalling the past. Drawing inspiration from materials and toys from childhood, I want the viewer to interact with each piece. The intention is to transport the viewer back to a state of childlike creativity and naivete. What do we notice as children? Who and what are we influenced by?
An integral part of my process is finding pre-owned objects and vintage artifacts to repurpose. Collecting previously used and discarded objects acknowledges their former lives and intentionally transforms them into a narrative of my design. By considering details about who may have used these objects, when, and why, a narrative is able to take form. This body of work is an expression of originality, unapologetic youthfulness, and spontaneity; I want the joy of making the work to carry through to the viewers.
