Artist Statement
Gene’s Place is a series of intimate paintings that romanticize my grandfather’s California home. I depict the house and the impressions of those who have inhabited it over the last two decades. My paintings transform the interior from a simple portrait into a poem of time and disposition. Furniture and objects stand in for people, and the house feels both alive and silent. I leave exteriors non-descript. That is, there are no signifying landmarks that dictate where one lays in space and time. The light draws you through the house and toward the window. Outside, there is nothing to grasp. You are left disoriented and seeking stability, as you are pulled back to the safety of the indoors. This series stands as an ode to my childhood in the shadow of impermanence.
