Artist Statement

These images that I’ve created are meant to be improvisational, angry, nightmarish, cathartic, and fun. I used large paper and thick, gestural strokes of oil pigment to make scenes that vibrate and envelop the viewer. I am fascinated by the human form, and bodily shapes take the foreground on the paper. I draw from a lot of different places; Keith Haring, Mike Henderson, and a host of early black-and-white filmmakers, notably Fritz Lang, who was one of the first to put petroleum jelly on the camera lens to create dreamy, hazy scenes. The material I use to blend the oil on the paper closely resembles petroleum jelly, and I hope I capture similar feelings to these artists’ works; the nightmarish haziness of “Metropolis” combined with the playful chaos of Haring’s “Tuttomondo” and the angry vocalization of Henderson’s “The Scream”. These are meant to be pieces that can be sat with, experienced, and dived in to.
