This monster collage investigates play in the gallery space. It is both reframing of what is considered good, meaningful, or gallery-worthy art and a genuine invitation for more fun and accessibility in ‘serious’ art environments. This work doesn’t necessarily need to be grappled with or analyzed but is intended to encourage imagination and playful exploration of the scene. It is, over all else, meant to simply be enjoyable and humorous.
That said, these creatures do hold personal significance, as I revisit my childhood interests. As a kid that found great joy in the monsters in fantasy picture books as well as real life creatures (a tribute to the gulper eel, which I did a report on in my early schooling, swims near the bottom right corner), I am interested in how humans relate to the strange or unusual and why that is often differentiated from cute and friendly.
