Artist Statement

Laying the human body onto the prepped paper, the silhouette is captured. This breaks from traditional botanical and negative contact cyanotypes. Layered body positions produce double exposures comparable to a long exposed photograph of a figure in motion. The Prussian blue and brush work emphasize the work's dual nature as a photo process initiated with the painted application of light-sensitive solution. The life-size scale of the work creates a connection with the viewer, enabling them to recreate the process and positions in their mind.

The positions mimic a few of the various sleeping positions, evoking the motion of tossing and turning to find comfort yet experiencing discomfort induced by surgeries requiring antibiotics and opioids for recovery. Long-term use and high dosages become a catalyst for physical and mental suffering. This work is created through the process of coming to terms with those negative aspects. It displays, represents, and performs the physical and mental suffering of my body.
