Artist Statement

Saintlike is a charcoal drawing series that aims to explore the intertwining iconography of Roman Catholicism and Italian performance art of the 16th century. My experiences growing up in a religious household have allowed me to investigate the relationships built through and fostered by religion, while my background as an art historian empowers me to be critical of the past. It is my goal to highlight the shared humanity of religious figures, like saints, and performing artists without condemning either. The reduction of performance art to a two-dimensional medium allows for a shift in perspective that encourages the viewer to visualize both religion and performance art as a documentation of tradition.
