Artist Statement

Each created as a 1-2 second handheld photographic exposure, the works in this series are defined by process and form as opposed to premeditation. Overt, covert, subtle and crude, the motion of the camera during the moment of capture is what defines each image. By utilizing longer shutter speeds, I was able to combine multiple perspectives into one image. There is a certain uncanny essence that is evoked in this collision of viewpoints into the impression of a person. This sort of abstraction of the human form deeply intrigues me.

This project was also an exercise in chance. Though I chose to display only six images in the series, the total number of images captured during the project was in excess of 650. Since it was impossible to know exactly what result I would get from each unique, unrepeatable motion of the hand, my process was in a constant state of flux. This gestural style of photography thrives on the unexpected and unimagined-- there are zero works in the series that I had any sort of solid conception of before their creation. In the moment I first saw each image on the back of my camera, I was able to discover my own work for the first time.
