Artist Statement

I draw portraits in graphite and marker to represent the dichotomy present in the perspectives of how we view ourselves and how others view us. I focus on portraiture because of the overwhelming amount of information that can be found in a mere expression. All of my subjects are black men who have greatly affected my life and mean a great deal to me as a result of this influence. I chose to focus on the faces of the black man because as a black man in a predominantly white institution of higher learning, we face active looks of discontent regularly. These drawings allow for this judgement to be welcomed and promote discussion about the prejudices of those viewing.
