Artist Statement
The spirit of the Creator is said to have three properties; generative, operative, and destructive. This piece is a love letter to the hidden world of the supernatural. It is an exaltation of the queer body, and a reconfiguration of elemental and color correspondences built throughout history. I center darkness as a generator, and light as having destructive properties. The coffin inset within the pentagram’s form nods to the stasis of divinity, while the shape itself, inverted, relaxes Christian biases against magical symbols. Raised Catholic, G.O.D. is a physical manifestation of my personal ritual, each stroke of the process bringing the altar to life. I use acrylic paint because of its lack of esteem; a young medium, it is regarded as less professional, classical, and enduring as oil. The thick pigmentation and fast-drying quality of acrylic paint allow me to build upon the surface of the wood and create a stratified effect. Building G.O.D. gave me insight into the interconnectedness of all things in this world, sewn from the same energetic fabric, as well as the cycles of Earth such as birth, life, and death.
