Artist Statement
I am drawn to the artistry of topography, specifically the translation of three-dimensional landscapes into two-dimensional maps. By carving lines dictated by the natural movement of my hand, these ceramic tiles become three-dimensional drawings, creating a map that bears the imprint of my intuition. Although the lines are motivated by instinct, the shape and placement of the tiles, as well as the structure they form, are deliberate, exploring the intersection between nature and order.
Working in clay is a lengthy and sometimes distressing process; however, it is simultaneously an extremely comforting experience. Creating each tile allowed me to organize and control the chaos and complexity of my reality. This installation draws the viewer into a corner and invites them to closely explore individual tiles while enveloped by the larger formation. The surface encourages the viewer to read the installation as a passage of time, with each piece acting as a single moment.
