Artist Statement

My piece is made of plaster cloth molds of myself and a woman. I want the viewers to replace themselves with a figure or both in my piece and invoke the consciousness that they are the main character of their life story. In a lot of life situations we like to imagine ourselves as the final girl or Rambo; you versus the world; us versus them; good versus bad. That is why we find so much comfort in movies because they are little microcosms to life events with suspense climax and conclusion sometimes ending positively or negatively in which we can relate. We aim for positive conclusions in life because it is the only thing we can do until our final negative conclusion comes. There are plenty of moments where we realize there is more to life than ourselves, but I want the viewer to take a moment to pretend there is not. I think there is a loss of identity in modernity so self reflection is important. The viewer should be able to take whatever they want to take out of it, but for me the piece represents struggle due my intentions, the arrangement of the casts, and the process it took me to make them. I attempt to make classical references to artistic legends of the past as well as ancient Mediterranean principles.
