Artist Statement

My abstract figurative sculptures convey the connections possible and expression of emotions within relationships. This work draws inspiration from a variety of sources, from bell hook’s emphasis on caring in Teaching to Transgress to Michelangelo’s expression of maternal love and anguish in the Pietà. These pieces are made through the labor-intensive process of carving in which the forms emerge from solid portions of wood and then need to be refined. This process is similar to a relationship, if mistakes are made, it shows. Through abstraction, these figures allow a more open understanding by a wider audience, therefore allowing a larger dialogue about our human connections.
