Artist Statement
Noah Gunther’s digital abstractions deal with the area in between our physical world and the computer world. These worlds are both constructed, by various methods – language, images, sensory perception – and in both worlds, the underlying systems of construction go generally unnoticed. In these underlying systems, after all, is not where the world is. The world is in the results of these systems – where these systems are water, the world is the boat, the world is the buoy, the world is the duck. Like the duck, though, what’s going on is only half what’s on the surface. Maybe less. What’s going on is the stuff underneath, the grit inside of the sandcastle, the branches that burn to make the fire. This work might be fire, just like the other work in the gallery, but it also deals in the branches. We all burn these branches.
The area between the computer world and our own is becoming hazy. What does exist are the formal systems we use to understand the two. These systems are not especially different from each other – largely, they are the same, as they are both composed of small commands and simple forms that combine and flex. Not machine language, and not chemistry. Mostly, words and images.
