Artist Statement

In my work, I aim to detach myself from objective art and dive into my natural sense of aesthetics, experimenting with the intermingling of pigment, texture, and light to achieve something that I find visually appealing. My goal is to strip this process down to an entirely intuitive level, making each addition or subtraction based on nothing but an artistic impulse. By founding this process entirely on my own guttural reactions to what I am working with, I can avoid letting my mind and my notions about art get in the way of what my eye sees, and how I respond to it.

During the creation of these works, I collected pieces from the environment around me – melted solder and trimmings from a recent hardware project, jagged chunks of mirror from an old sculpture, toilet paper, and string – and layered them with raw color, gloss, loose pigment, and gold leaf. I built up each layer quickly, repeating this process almost randomly. Bouncing from piece to piece allowed me to detach myself from any ideas or plans that I had for each individual canvas, and each time I returned to a piece I added something different, sometimes obliterating entire layers to add new ideas on top. I carried on with this process, adding and deleting and re-coating and adjusting, until I arrived at the works you see before you today.
