Artist Statement
These mountainous sculptures are created to enhance the physical sensation of being overwhelmed by individual textural experiences. The objects used throughout these pieces not only serve as a visual representation of my childhood, but also as a vehicle of memory. Even now, I unintentionally continue to attach my experiences to objects to cope with various traumatic, overstimulating, and hyper-fixating circumstances. By using fragile materials like wax and plaster, I allude to the fragility of my mental state when impacted by trauma and/or excessive stimulation. I have always been hyperaware of my inability to maintain a full grasp of reality because of my hyperactive thought process, which I often suppress to conform to neurotypical society. The materials I use to portray my internalized emotional experiences provide intimate and vulnerable textural properties. Throughout childhood, I have found myself viscerally connected to objects. I have consistently done so with toys, clothing, and everyday items. This project has helped me understand my non-linear mental processing of everyday life and memories, and continues to re-teach me about how I’ve processed past events.
