Artist Statement

This work explores how Black audiences experience predominantly white media, examining the connection and alienation it creates. I highlight how whiteness shapes narratives that Black viewers relate to and aspire to, yet often from a perspective that excludes their lived experiences. This contrast between broad white-centered storytelling and the limited scope of Black narratives can create a false sense of inclusivity while reinforcing privilege.

I also explore the emotional journey of being lost, searching for belonging, and ultimately finding yourself. Growing up I’ve had to unravel my loss of identity. My work asks whether stories dominated by white characters represent everyone and how replacing them with Black or POC figures positively shifts meaning and relatability.

At the same time, I examine how Black audiences engaging with white media can challenge assumptions, acknowledge biases, and reshape cultural narratives by centering Black perspectives. I seek to understand how reclaiming space in these narratives can offer a path toward self-discovery.
