Artist Statement
This body of work depicts celebration and community brought together by culture. I use different textures, fabrics and materials in artwork for dimension. I combine pieces of my heritage together to create scenes of festivities. I use my artwork to celebrate aspects of my identity, gender and culture. By adding pieces that are 3D, I’m inviting the viewer to enjoy in the festivities I am sharing. By using bright colors and thick layers of paint, I recreate traditional textiles.
Even through the bright colors of celebration, I still would like to ask the questions that never get answers through the people I depict. Why does our gender determines the role we have in Mexican society and our future? I want to be able to celebrate my community while asking for the opportunity to change societal gender roles. The celebration of community, culture and colonialism unifies the multi-dimensional aspects in this work.
