Artist Statement

My current body of work, called “A Real Horrorshow: Gears of Flesh and Feeling,” explores the overlap between art and brutality, drawing inspiration from Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel A Clockwork Orange and Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of the same name. Using oil paint and charcoal, I present unsettling imagery that delves into conformity, sadism, and the absurdity of the human condition. This exhibition follows Alexander DeLarge’s journey, a character emblematic of sexual brutality and the struggle for autonomy in an oppressive society. The selected film stills are crucial to my narrative, aiming to communicate these themes even to those unfamiliar with the film. My work reflects the tension between individual desires and societal expectations, examining how art can challenge or perpetuate the status quo. I seek to comment on the pervasiveness of conformity and the insidious nature of social norms, urging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about their lives and the thin line between order and abuse. In a world increasingly defined by brutality and alienation, I aim to capture both the beauty and horror of our shared humanity, emphasizing the continued relevance of A Clockwork Orange.
