Is This All I Am? is a collection of 2-Dimensional works that focus on self-image and how societal standards can make self perception all-consuming. This construct provokes emotions of distress which leads to inner conflict. These three pieces discuss my internal battle with depression, fear of personal success being dismissed because of gender stereotypes, and particular complications with eating habits. Is This All I Am? explores several identities and their incongruence and conflicting personas while trying to understand who I truly am.
I have a strong relationship with mending as a craft beginning when my grandmother taught me how to embroider. While exploring feminism in art, I have developed a powerful belief that fiber art is fine art. Incorporating embroidery as a conceptual layer in my work functions metaphorically as an act of strengthening a detrimental situation
Is This All I Am? is an homage to my younger self who was experiencing these challenging times. While making this work, I found myself processing these situations and formed a therapeutic relationship with my artistic process. Presenting these pieces to the public completes the circle of grief and steers towards self-acceptance. I invite the viewer to contemplate their own identities, their perception of themselves, and to reflect on how they are viewed by society.
