Artist Statement

In my paintings, I take inspiration from late medieval and early renaissance artists to convey the drama and storytelling of the body 一 the fleshy, visceral, and spiritually confounding. Using the body as a focal point for violence, sex, brutality, and mutilation, I am exploring how I view my body in response to personal questions about self worth and purpose while battling severe depression. I lean towards the late medieval style of oil painting, because the melodrama portrayed in those paintings tends to bridge the gap between absurdity, reality, and mythos. While becoming a medievalist, I have learned that people in Medieval Europe saw in themselves a connection to the body and spirit that illuminates the existential horror and beauty of life, and my work seeks to tap into that body-spirit dichotomy for myself.
