Artist Statement

I’ve always had an interest in fantasy worlds and their creation. More recently, this interest has developed into an interest in concept art and the role it plays in the creation of media like video games and movies. To me, concept art is especially interesting in its emphasis on exploring ideas over just producing a polished final artwork, and I hope to convey some of that through my work. This project is representative of what I’ve learned about the process behind concept art and the ways that knowledge has influenced my own artistic process.

This series of digital artworks acts as concept art for a video game, depicting important locations in the chronological order that they would be presented to the player. My main goal with these works was to create a cohesive set of landscapes that looked like they belonged in a fantasy world, while still drawing on real-life inspirations. I also wanted to focus on depicting the magic in this world visually, using contrasting color and high saturation to draw the viewer’s eye to it, while keeping it relatively integrated with the rest of the landscape.
