Artist Statement

Mixed Up is a glimpse into my personal identity journey told through various memories and reflections on events throughout my life so far. Race and ethnicity and all elements of a person’s identity are deeply rooted in our personal histories. As a white presenting person of color, my experience is uncommon but not unprecedented. Throughout history, many Black or Mixed Americans have chosen to pass as white, and many others have specifically chosen not to. Mixed Up explores my decision not to pass as white because it would feel like I’m erasing a huge part of my story, and it also complicates this decision by addressing and acknowledging the white privilege I have because of my appearance and the questions this raises.

I hope that by sharing my experience I can inspire other people to embrace all aspects of their identities and educate people on the nuances and complex elements of race, ethnicity, and being mixed, multiracial, or ethnically ambiguous and the feelings that come with it. Mixed Up was created in Procreate and printed with Blurb.
