Artist Statement
The majority of my inspiration comes from solarpunk, a concept that intertwines human society with nature instead of human society fighting nature. It’s about imagining a future where sustainable practices are the norm and cities are green with forests instead of gray with garbage. The practice is about solar panels, recycled wood, home-grown food, conservation, humanitarianism, decolonization, high-tech, low-tech, and most importantly: hope. The “punk” in solarpunk signifies hoping for a brighter future in spite of everything.
My work aims to evoke that such a future could be possible and imagine what it might look like. Architecture is the focus because changing infrastructure is often the first step in lowering our carbon footprint. The building models’ designs draw influence from art deco, art nouveau, and nature. When combined, these influences reflect the idea that the conveniences of the present day can, in fact, coexist peacefully with older low-tech practices and the natural world.
