Artist Statement

Fear: an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. I take inspiration from this feeling, which others seem to frequently suppress, as well as the way that I think about it in my everyday life. I find our reality to hold the most gruesome events, surpassing even those of fiction.

I view myself and my art as a mirror, a reflection, of society. In its current state, it is agony, which is why my main concentration in art is horror. Fantasy and fictional elements in my work exaggerate the real horrors of the present to expose their grotesque natures. In this work, for example, I use Lawrence University to describe the twisted relationship I have with this predominantly white space as a student of color. The human mind is tortuous and convoluted, complex and chaotic, and my art attempts to manifest that. In the end, we are inseparable from the monstrosity of the nightmares depicted in my work.

Using colored pencils, I push the definition of gore and detailed art to create nightmare-fueled imagery. Ultimately, my goal is to visually disturb and provoke the viewers and evoke a sense of twisted adrenaline while demonstrating how I see reality.
