Artist Statement

Material and form tell stories in cohesion. In my series, Dight I, II, III, I am exploring questions of interconnectedness between the corporeal and cerebral elements of the gut, and the manifestation of alterity within myself when I try to detach the relationships surrounding the gut.

Being trained as both a scientist and an artist has taught me the importance of perspective, process, and time. Change-- reflected in creation and loss-- happens in time scales, from the birth of a mountain the death of a microbe. On a personal level, processes are reflected within the body, through the time it takes to heal and grow and through the split-second moments where everything changes. This series reflects the importance of process by creating material for the show by hand and with the slow and steady fermentation process used to create the paper.

I hope to reflect the ways that personal journeys are intrinsically reflected in the forces of life that process us. Working with materials like fermented paper symbolize the ways that organic life morphs and manifests itself into a new form, and that juxtaposing processes evolve together to create unity.
