Artist Statement

In my installation I am working through grief and loss. I use photography to reflect on the memory of my mother; I recall and respond to photographs of my mother as a young adult in snapshots or photo albums. These photos along with the objects that belonged to her that I have saved play an significant role in conserving the memory of my mother. This process continues as I work more with the objects I have saved and those I create.

I am thinking through photography and its relationship to death, using the reading that Roland Barthes applies to photography in his work Camera Lucida. Using the memory of my mother through her objects I hope to gain a deeper knowledge of this relationship along with the relationship photography has with authenticity, representation, and memory.
