Artist Statement

I make art about the misconceptions, mistreatments, and stigmas of mental and emotional illnesses and disorders. I tap into personal and historical sources for inspiration and information regarding the somber reality about the slow progression of acceptance in the world of the mentally and emotionally ill. The substantial argument for this body of work is the truth that mental and emotional illnesses do not solely afflict the societal deemed inferior persons of the world; everyone regardless of gender, religion, creed, and class can be a victim. The subjects that hold the strongest validation of this truth are the recognizable and famous who often hide their struggles in fear of shame or ridicule. The first half of the twentieth century during Hollywood’s Golden Era of glitz and glamour proved to be a difficult time for the countless actresses who were forced to hide and cope with illnesses that were hardly understood. Lacking proper support and coping methods, combined with the veil of disgrace and humiliation that came with asking for help, many of these actresses turned to substance abuse or self-harm to survive in a world where no one cared until it was too late.
