Artist Statement

I would not be who I am today without the people and experiences of my past. Most are good, some are bad, and sometimes I wish I had done things differently, but in the end, everything has made me the person I am today and I would not change that for the world.

I choose to work with book and box structures because of the intimacy of the structure. From the beginning of the process, I am one with the piece. Once the image is created, I spend quality time with the paper, folding it into a new form. The creation of the book is personal; the interaction between the viewer and the book is personal because the viewer must get close and see all parts of the book, every last detail of the image, in order to understand it.

All of my work stems from the same place. The loss of my grandfather made me more connected to my mother’s side of the family; the indirect words my mom gives me keep her close despite being more than 800 miles away; and the decisions I have made, whether choosing to go to school in Wisconsin or remaining part of a group I have grown apart from, sometimes leave me with an emptiness but are decisions that make me a better person because they ultimately teach me to be stronger and stand by my choices. Everything has a reason; every piece is a connection to me.
