Abstract

The 1820 Schoolcraft journal chronicles the events and natural science of the Cass Expedition of 1820 into Michigan Territory. It includes many fine copper plate engravings of the natural features and geologic formations the expedition encountered, as well as a map highlighting the route taken by the expedition. Written in a scientific narrative journal format, and using references, it represents one of the best early examples of modern scientific writing in the United States. This journal launched Schoolcraft's career as a natural historian and anthropologist for the United States government.
