Sustainability means shaping human cultural, economic and political systems to harmonize with other processes in the natural world, in order to maintain the vigor and resilience of both. The study of sustainability includes learning from the past, evaluating the present, and improving the environment for the future. The environmental problems we face demand careful analysis of complex scientific and cultural issues, the imaginative thinking that leads to solutions, and the social commitment to work at finding common ground with others. The liberal arts curriculum, we believe, fosters these core values related to the Care of the Earth. Academic and co-curricular life at Lawrence prepares our graduates to sink deep, green roots in their communities and commits them to environmental stewardship wherever they call home.
