Artist Statement

Rooted in the rhythmic nature of the acoustic guitar, the album The Balance of Fear and Devotion follows a loose narrative detailing emotional states that encompass both high and low points during my college career. Each song was conceived at moments of intense introspection centered around anxiety effecting interpersonal relationships. The album narrates the journey through the emotions of longing, hope, uncertainty, shame, and joy.

In the exhibition, each woodcut print correlates the core emotion associated with each individual song. The process of carving woodblocks is incredibly meditative and, by its nature, evokes a contemplative state of mind. By exposing and working with the natural grain of the wood, each image incorporates multiple layers and textures that give the prints a life of their own.
