Artist Statement
Comics allow me to share my vision of a story. I have always enjoyed fiction and the worlds I build from books. My desires to both express these fantasies to others and to offer a piece of myself to a narrative have always pushed me to create comics. Ersatz is one of many attempts to share original content with others while experimenting with the visual elements of comic design.
This particular issue is a prequel to the comic I wish to draw and publish after graduation. It introduces the captain of the ship Persephone, in which the future issues will take place, and the circumstances that lead to his appointment. The purpose behind it is to reveal the captain's character and expose the audience to the universe of the story, so I chose to write about something achingly familiar and simple, the deterioration of a relationship.
