Artist Statement

Why do humans need nature to be artificial, regimented, and exact?

The untouched parts of the world are the most beautiful.

Cities, roads and sidewalks box in nature with concrete.

With this work I examine how artificial and real collide. By using organic and man-made objects in a variety of ways I have created an obvious contrast in materials and shapes that is intended to visually address the incongruities inherent within human urbanization. The viewer should question how he or she interacts with and impacts nature, which conjures a personal and internal response that brings them closer to the earth.

This work was funded in part by a Mellon Senior Experience Grant.
