Artist Statement

Materealization

The way in which we perceive the world is largely a function of material: The objects that compose this domain affect not only how we feel in our immediate environment, but also the degree and facility with which we can manipulate this environment.

This body of work poses human forms made from reused or recycled materials in ways that emphasize the relationships we have with each material. It is meant to facilitate a realization of the materials that we interact with every day. The novel use of steel, aluminum and polyethylene terephthalate is intended to challenge their conventional function, while the posed forms explore the ways in which we, as individuals and as a species, view and interact with each material.

This work was funded in part by a Mellon Senior Experience Grant.
